We were asked to scale up a legacy PHP4 based e-commerce system handcuffed by a AS/400 in the back-office. The upgraded system needed to process $0.5M-$1M online transactions in 1-3 hours on peak days.
Our customer is a half a century old family owned business in the Midwest with tens of thousands of sales reps and hundreds of thousands of consumers who purchases their products. When they asked for help, the majority of their orders came in via a bank of fax machines and phone calls. They were running their Web order entry system built with PHP and MySQL on a shared hosting environment with the hope to migrate all order processing online.
